Free or Open Sources for Images

Where possible, we try to include examples in our courses that reflect the diversity of Canadian society. Showing diversity in cultures, ethnicities, genders, ages, and abilities in both the visual representations we use and the instructional examples in courses, we engage with students, value their experience and community, and prepare students for life in a diverse society by challenging preconceived ideas about others. Tips to keep in mind:

  • All genders should be represented in our courses.
  • Be sensitive in how we depict others in a course. 
  • Avoid cultural stereotypes.
  • In most cases it is best to show people in respectful and modern settings.

TRU Open Press Creator Resources shares resources for open-licensed images or videos that reflect diversity. TRU’s Intellectual Property Office maintains the Free Photos resource for open media in courses. Some examples:
